Worlds of Books

3 min read
They wonder why she is lost in the many worlds books have to offer. They wonder why she puts “reading” higher on her To-Do list than typical things like “get sleep” or “do homework” or even “ watch tv.” Well, the reason she puts reading above those kinds of things is because it’s easier for her to get lost in the worlds of magnificent characters with conflicts that make her troubles look easy. The reason she puts books above sleep is because those wonderful books provide a haven dreams cannot - dreams are full of her own subconscious, they would be littered with the pain she faces in reality. She puts reading above all else because in the worlds of books she can believe that there are worse things for her to worry about than if her family is proud of her or disappointed. If second place is just another way of saying first loser in the eyes of her parents. If a perfect 4.0 isn’t good enough anymore. If there isn’t enough time in the day to balance school and pets and family and friends and a sport that will make her look good on paper. They wonder why she loves the idea of to fake people in love. Well it’s because she worries deep down, if she is far too mediocre to be loved herself. And when a person dies in a book. She sobbs. Because they were a kind distraction who stayed with her, who gave her hope in her world where hope started dying. Who let her forget what they said about her and let her believe people can become great from nothing but sheer will. Because they kept her from feeling as alone on the inside, as she was on the outside. They wonder why she can’t stop picking up books, well that’s because when one book ends, she will need a new kind distraction, a new world to take refugee in. To avoid the hell of reality. But, she smiles around you. She has never shed a single hint of a tear before your eyes. So this must just be a story. Well…if you looked at her at home, you wouldn’t see a smiling girl…you would see that she is hidden in her closet with a flashlight and a book. And after a while her sobbs will quiet, her tears will cease, and her tear stained face will dry. Slowly as she once again gets lost in the many worlds books have to offer.
